From the Middle Ages, \u201clazaretos\u201d were built throughout Europe: infirmaries dedicated to St Lazarus, considered the protector of lepers. For centuries, the term \u201clazareto\u201d meant a sanitary facility for the quarantine of those afflicted by all kinds of contagious diseases. Along with the physical effects of leprosy, the affected suffered social stigmatisation resulting from fear of contagion.
In harbour towns like Muros these facilities were especially common, since maritime traffic was one of the ways leprosy proliferated. Around the estuary, an enclave of trade and pilgrimages to Santiago de Compostela, hospitals proliferated to care for the poor, the pilgrims and the sick.
The Lazarus Hospital in Muros probably existed in the 14th century. The first reference is from 1421, when a donation was made. Throughout the centuries donations of this kind continued, and the hospital acquired houses and properties for which tenants paid rent, which went toward the care of the sick. Rather than one large building, it consisted of several houses, used for the care of the sick when necessary, otherwise rented out.
The hospital was linked to the Sanctuary of the Virgin of the Way, a Gothic building erected by the Archbishop of Santiago after taking control of the town of Muros, probably on the site of a Romanesque hermitage. Some authors suggest that the building attached to the front of the sanctuary formed a part of it, though that seems unlikely.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

It was founded in 1418 by Diego Rodriguez de Muros, then the town judge, and functioned as a hospital all the way up to the mid- 20th century. It retains that spirit today, as a social centre. Various records demonstrate its survival through the centuries, such as donations to the hospital, mention of the properties whose profits contributed to expenses, or reports of visits to the parish made by the archdiocese\u2019s clergymen.
A visit in 1585 left valuable information about the hospital\u2019s operation. It indicates that it was obliged to tend to the sick, whether they were poor, pilgrims, or foreigners (remember that Muros was then a commercial port with access to the Jacobean pilgrimage route). It refers to details like the bedclothes, and notes the special treatment afforded to priests, and pilgrims \u201cof quality\u201d. At that time, six to nine beds were normally in use. Patients could stay until they were in a fit state to beg for alms. Naturally the hospital had to take care not to become a haven for \u201cidlers and unsavoury characters\u201d.
The form of the present building owes itself to a 19th-century reconstruction, of which the portico is noteworthy. The ambitious initial project had to be scaled down because of the French invasion and subsequent difficulties.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n

Desde la Edad Media, Europa se llen\u00f3 de lazaretos: hospitales bajo la advocaci\u00f3n de San L\u00e1zaro, considerado protector de los leprosos. Durante siglos, el t\u00e9rmino lazareto designar\u00eda a las instalaciones sanitarias destinadas a aislar a los infectados por todo tipo de enfermedades contagiosas. Junto a los efectos f\u00edsicos de la lepra, los afectados deb\u00edan hacer frente al estigma social, derivado del miedo al contagio.
En las villas portuarias, como Muros, era especialmente frecuente este tipo de instalaciones, ya que el tr\u00e1fico mar\u00edtimo era una de las v\u00edas de propagaci\u00f3n de la lepra. En la R\u00eda, enclave del tr\u00e1fico comercial y de peregrinos a Santiago de Compostela, proliferar\u00edan los hospitales para la atenci\u00f3n de pobres, peregrinos y enfermos.
El Hospital de Lazarados de Muros probablemente exist\u00eda ya en el siglo XIV. Las primeras referencias son de 1421, a\u00f1o en el que consta un donativo en su favor. A lo largo de los siglos se suceder\u00e1n este tipo de donaciones y el hospital se hizo con casas y propiedades por las cuales sus inquilinos pagaban rentas destinadas al cuidado de los enfermos. M\u00e1s que una gran construcci\u00f3n se trataba de varias casas que se destinaban al cuidado de los enfermos, o se alquilaban en tanto no eran necesarias para este uso.
Este hospital estuvo vinculado al Santuario de la Virgen del Camino, una construcci\u00f3n g\u00f3tica erigida por el Arzobispado de Santiago, tras hacerse con la villa de Muros, probablemente sobre una ermita rom\u00e1nica. Hospital de pobres<\/h3><\/div>\n\n\n\n

La solidaridad de la comunidad marinera incluye la atenci\u00f3n a los m\u00e1s necesitados. Fruto de ello algunas de las noticias m\u00e1s antiguas de la villa se refieren a su hospital de pobres.
Fue fundado en 1418 por Diego Rodr\u00edguez de Muros, por entonces juez de la villa, y mantuvo su funci\u00f3n hasta mediados del siglo XX. Hoy mantiene aquel esp\u00edritu como centro social.
Varias noticias van mostrando su pervivencia a lo largo de los siglos, tanto por donaciones al hospital, menci\u00f3n de las propiedades cuyas rentas se destinaban a sufragar sus gastos, o los testimonios de las visitas que los eclesi\u00e1sticos de la archidi\u00f3cesis hac\u00edan a la parroquia.
La visita realizada en 1585 nos deja informaci\u00f3n valiosa sobre su funcionamiento. Nos indica que debe atender a enfermos pobres y peregrinos, tambi\u00e9n extranjeros; recordemos que Muros era entonces puerto comercial y de acceso a la ruta jacobea. Se refiere a detalles como la ropa de las camas y se\u00f1ala que el trato especial que ha de brindarse a los sacerdotes y peregrinos de 'calidad' que se acogiesen en el hospital. Sol\u00eda haber, en aquella \u00e9poca, entre 6 y 9 personas alojadas.
Los enfermos se pod\u00edan quedar hasta que estuviesen en disposici\u00f3n de pedir limosna y, desde luego, el hospital deb\u00eda cuidarse de no convertirse en refugio de personas 'vagamundas y de mal vivir'.

Xunto aos efectos f\u00edsicos da lepra, os afectados ti\u00f1an que facer fronte ao estigma social, derivado do medo ao contaxio.
Nos portos de mar como Muros adoitaba haber este tipo de instalaci\u00f3ns, xa que o tr\u00e1fico mar\u00edtimo era unha das v\u00edas de propagaci\u00f3n da lepra. Na R\u00eda, punto estrat\u00e9xico do tr\u00e1fico comercial e de peregrinos a Santiago, multiplicaranse os hospitais para a atenci\u00f3n de pobres, peregrinos e enfermos.
O Hospital de Lazarados de Muros exist\u00eda xa no s\u00e9culo XIV. As primeiras referencias son do 1421, ano no que consta unha esmola ao seu favor. Ao longo dos s\u00e9culos sucederanse este tipo de doaz\u00f3ns e o hospital irase facendo con casas e propiedades polas que os seus alugados pagaban rendas destinadas ao coidado dos enfermos. M\u00e1is que unha gran construci\u00f3n, trat\u00e1base de varias casas que se adicaban ao coidado dos enfermos ou se alugaban mentres non fac\u00edan falta para este uso.
O hospital estivo vencellado ao santuario da Virxe do Cami\u00f1o, un edificio g\u00f3tico erixido polo Arcebispado de Santiago, logo de facerse coa vila de Muros, probablemente enriba dunha ermida rom\u00e1nica. A solidariedade da comunidade mari\u00f1eira d\u00e9ixase ver con claridade na atenci\u00f3n aos m\u00e1is necesitados. Testemu\u00f1a disto, algunha das novas m\u00e1is antigas da vila fan referencia ao seu hospital de pobres. Foi fundado en 1418 por Diego Rodr\u00edguez de Muros, daquela xu\u00edz da vila, e mantivo a s\u00faa funci\u00f3n ata mediados do s\u00e9culo XX. Hoxe conserva aquel esp\u00edrito como centro social.
Varias novas van amosando a s\u00faa supervivencia ao longo dos s\u00e9culos, tanto polas doaz\u00f3ns ao hospital como polas menci\u00f3ns das propiedades, das que as s\u00faas rendas se destinaban a sufragar os gastos, ou polas testemu\u00f1as das visitas que os eclesi\u00e1sticos da arquidiocese fac\u00edan \u00e1 parroquia.
A visita correspondente ao ano1585, d\u00e9ixanos informaci\u00f3n valiosa sobre o seu funcionamento. Ind\u00edcanos que debe atender a enfermos pobres e peregrinos, tam\u00e9n extranxeiros; lembremos que Muros era ent\u00f3n porto comercial e de acceso \u00e1 ruta xacobea. Ref\u00edrese a detalles como \u00e1 roupa das camas e sinala o trato especial que ha brindarse a sacerdotes e peregrinos de \u201ccalidade\u201d que se acollesen no hospital. Adoitaba haber naquela \u00e9poca entre 6 e 9 persoas aloxadas.
Os enfermos pod\u00edan ficar al\u00ed ata que estiveran en disposici\u00f3n de pediren esmola e, desde logo, o hospital deb\u00eda tentar non converterse nun refuxio de persoas \u201cvagabundas y de mal vivir\u201d.
O edificio que vemos hoxe, corresponde a unha construci\u00f3n do s\u00e9culo XIX na que destaca o seu p\u00f3rtico. In harbour towns like Muros these facilities were especially common, since maritime traffic was one of the ways leprosy proliferated. Around the estuary, an enclave of trade and pilgrimages to Santiago de Compostela, hospitals proliferated to care for the poor, the pilgrims and the sick.
The Lazarus Hospital in Muros probably existed in the 14th century. The first reference is from 1421, when a donation was made. Throughout the centuries donations of this kind continued, and the hospital acquired houses and properties for which tenants paid rent, which went toward the care of the sick. Rather than one large building, it consisted of several houses, used for the care of the sick when necessary, otherwise rented out.
The hospital was linked to the Sanctuary of the Virgin of the Way, a Gothic building erected by the Archbishop of Santiago after taking control of the town of Muros, probably on the site of a Romanesque hermitage. Some authors suggest that the building attached to the front of the sanctuary formed a part of it, though that seems unlikely.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Poor Hospital<\/h3><\/div>\n\n\n\n

The solidarity of the seafaring community includes tending to the needy. The village\u2019s oldest records attest to this, making reference to its poor hospital. It was founded in 1418 by Diego Rodriguez de Muros, then the town judge, and functioned as a hospital all the way up to the mid- 20th century. It retains that spirit today, as a social centre. Various records demonstrate its survival through the centuries, such as donations to the hospital, mention of the properties whose profits contributed to expenses, or reports of visits to the parish made by the archdiocese\u2019s clergymen.
A visit in 1585 left valuable information about the hospital\u2019s operation. It indicates that it was obliged to tend to the sick, whether they were poor, pilgrims, or foreigners (remember that Muros was then a commercial port with access to the Jacobean pilgrimage route). It refers to details like the bedclothes, and notes the special treatment afforded to priests, and pilgrims \u201cof quality\u201d. At that time, six to nine beds were normally in use. Patients could stay until they were in a fit state to beg for alms. Naturally the hospital had to take care not to become a haven for \u201cidlers and unsavoury characters\u201d.
The form of the present building owes itself to a 19th-century reconstruction, of which the portico is noteworthy. The ambitious initial project had to be scaled down because of the French invasion and subsequent difficulties.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n
